Bringing environmental protection nearer to the people
The field of human rights obligations related to a clean, safe, healthy and sustainable environment is expanding. Similarly, the interdependency of human rights and the environment is rapidly growing in acceptance and understanding among governments. Over 150 countries have binding legal obligations to respect, protect and fulfil the right to a healthy environment. Advancing human rights obligations related to the environment empowers individuals, peoples, and communities to combat the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
On October 8th, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a landmark resolution recognizing that a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a human right. The Human Rights Council resolution is a watershed moment in the fight against the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Executive Director of UNEP Inger Andersen called the resolution “an important step in building the planet as a safe and fair home to all,” calling the resolution “a shield for individuals and communities against risks to their health and livelihoods.” Read the full statement here.
UNEP supports the recognition, advancement and implementation of human rights related to the environment in a multifaceted approach, including through the Environmental Rights Initiative, which is a package of rights-based work undertaken by UNEP and partners dedicated to promote, protect and respect human rights obligations relating to the enjoyment of a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.
