The overall theme of UNEA-6 was effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
Member States and stakeholders came together at UNEA-6 and discussed how to advance the Decade of Action, with a focus on addressing the interlinkages of the three planetary environmental crises. A series of leadership and multi-stakeholder dialogues and more than 30 official side events and associated events laid the grounds for strengthened future global and regional coordinated efforts by the United Nations, Member States and partners to deliver high-impact planetary action.
- In paragraph 9 of decision 5/4 of the UNEA, the Assembly requested its Bureau, in consultation with the Committee of Permanent Representatives, to define a theme for UNEA-6 no later than twelve months in advance.
- During a joint Bureau meeting of the Assembly and the Committee of Permanent Representatives on 30 January 2023, the Bureau decided the theme for UNEA-6.
- The President of UNEA-6 sent a letter dated 6 February 2023 addressed to Ministers of Environment informing them of the theme.
